The Strike Is..

OVER!  WGA members voted Yes 92.5% to lift the strike.  All employed writers will be returning to work immediately (meaning tomorrow).  Considering the overwhelming number of members who voted for lifting the strike, I think it is very likely that the contract will be ratified.  The vote is taking place over the next couple of weeks.

Situation

Apparently, his team was ambushed when they breached the house.  My uncle was the third man (or fourth, I believe he was the third, though).  He said that when they passed one of the rooms, he saw muzzle flash come out of the room and his partner dropped.  He began turning to return fire when he saw another flash.  That shot dropped him and he was unconscious (I'm not sure for how long).  The other officers returned fire while extracting both of them from the building.

My uncle had regained consciousness by the time he reached the hospital.  He was busy debriefing (telling people what happened) with the left side of his jaw shattered.  The bullet entered just to the left of his mouth, striking the jawbone at an angle that forced the bullet to disintegrate.  The doctors said that he's very fortunate (I call it a miracle) that it happened to hit at the angle it did.  If it had gone in at any other angle, it could have hit his brain or several other critical areas that could have meant instant death or caused him to bleed to death.

Currently, he is supposed to pull through just fine.  However, there are several possible complications.  Infection is an obvious one.  Swelling is already a problem.  He currently has breathing tubes going down his nose into his lungs, thereby keeping an airway open in case the swelling closes down his wind passage.  They want to attempt to remove the tubes in about 36 hours.  There are several times that liquid has built up in the tubes and kept him from breathing.  Unfortunately, the hospital staff has not been particularly responsive in these cases.  We're making sure that a family member is by his side 24-7, until the tubes are removed.

The surgeons are going to have to reconstruct his left jaw.  Right now, his mouth is wired shut to allow the damaged bones to heal appropriately.  I would assume that he is going to be on a liquid diet for two months, at the very least.

I will keep all of you informed of any important changes.  Thank you all very much for your thoughts and prayers!  Sorry for the short replies (or the lack of any), I'll try to thank you properly when I get the chance.

Prayer For My Uncle; Severely Wounded

As some of you know, my uncle is on LAPD SWAT. And as you may have seen on headline news this morning, two officers were shot when they breached a barricaded suspect's house; one was killed and the other seriously injured. My uncle was the one who survived. He's supposed to make it, but I believe he was shot in the face. So, please pray for him, his wife, and the rest of our family. I'll let you know how he's doing. Thanks.

Now, Where Were We?

In case you didn't hear, the AMPTP started informal talks with the WGA on Wednesday. This follows a fairly fast negotiation period between the producers and the DGA, which resulted in a temporary agreement. While the DGA agreement lacks several key items that the WGA has on the table, the producers accepted other items which would have been impossible to get, if it hadn't been for the strike.

The WGA has declared a media blackout during negotiations this time, so we won't know what's happening until it happens. They pulled a couple of items off of the table in a gesture of reasonability, which the producers will no doubt claim is not the case if talks break down again.

Lionsgate and Marvel Studios signed contracts recently, joining the long list of independent studios which are signed with the WGA. Hopefully, the momentum of these studios and the prospect of a wrecked Academy Awards is enough to spur the producers in the right direction.

In personal news, I've been making fair progress on my screenplays. I have twenty-two pages of one, which are already substantially edited. My first two days, I was able to write six pages per hour and only worked about an hour each day. Now, I'm getting into balancing dialogue and fitting elements into the middle of the script. I've also started on another screenplay, which now has about six pages finished. I need a speed powerup..

The End Is Near

The end of the strike, that is. Weinstein Co. is currently in talks to finalize a contract, United Artists recently signed one, Worldwide Pants signed last week, and CBS supposedly just signed in, too. Plus, with the demise of this year's Golden Globes, companies are starting to realize that the Oscars could be jeopardized as well. I believe this would be catastrophic for the studios. They've already lost a lot of their audience because of the junk they've been releasing lately and now they might be losing one of the biggest publicity events of the year. But, that might not be a bad thing.. *rubs hands together in glee*
